Tips For The Longest Lasting Spray Tans
Clients constantly ask us “how long will my spray tan last?” so we’d like to take . We always tell our clients that your spray tan will last between 7 and 10 days, and some of our clients see their tans lasting even longer than that. By doing some very specific things. So, I’m sure many of you who are thinking, “I wish my tan lasted just 7 days…!” and wondering , “Ok, so how do they do it?” That’s simple, they get the best advice and follow the right techniques! These tips are a few things you can do before your appointment to prep your skin, and a few of our most important tips you can do after to extend the life of your tan and keep your skin looking radiant for as long as possible.
There are a few things that determine the quality of any good spray tan. They are: the spray solution itself, the esthetician and her technique, the equipment, and just as important as all of those – the skin care of the client. So let’s start by talking about prepping your skin for the spray tan, the first thing you’ll want to do is shave or wax, 12-48 hours before your appointment. You want to do this to remove any hair that might get in the way of the tanning solution and mess with you getting the most even and quality spray tan. It also gives your pores time to close up after the exfoliation of your skin so you don’t absorb any tanning solution down into your pores. The next and also most important thing you can do beforehand is to scrub your skin. Many people don’t realize how often we shed our skin. So when you exfoliate your skin you are removing the dead and old skin that’s about to fall off anyway, and when your skin dies and falls off your body – so does your tan. By scrubbing before your tan you give yourself the freshest, youngest skin you can get for the tanning solution to set up on which means your skin will last longer when moisturized and cared for properly in order to last as long as possible before the outer layers of skin that contain the tanning solution begin to fall away as will your tan. We recommend a dry brush or exfoliating mitt on completely dry skin. And note, you want to do this 12 hours before to allow your pores time to recover and because exfoliating products can leave a film on the skin’s surface which can block the tanning solution from properly soaking into the outer layers of your skin.
After getting your tan, put on LOOSE, DARK clothes. It only takes a few minutes to get your spray tan, but it will take several hours for the tanning solution to actually set into your skin. Which means you’ll want to protect and care for your spray tan for as long as you can. Which means no tight fitting clothing, no water, and be extra careful with what you come into contact with because the tanning solution that’s darkening your skin will darken the clothing it comes in contact with (temporarily) and also any other people it comes in contact with (also temporarily! as in 7-10 days). Keep in mind that the color you are seeing right after your tan is just the spray tanning bronzer and it takes around 4 hrs for to soak into your skin. If you put on something tight, like a bra, it will rub the solution off of your skin before it has a chance to set. And if your bra removes the bronzer, it will probably look like you tanned with the bra on. Also, please do not wash your hands for at least 2 hours. This is very important because if you splash or obtain any type of splash marks it will wash away the solution and you won’t tan where the water washed away your solution. Also, if you touch your body with your palms, the solution will come off on your hands and tan your palms as if they were sprayed. I’m sure you’ve seen the stories posted online – we want to make sure you’re prepare and get the best tan you possibly can. Lastly, please don’t put on any lotion until after you take your fist rinse shower and wash off all the bronzer from the spray tanning solution.
Once you’ve rinsed off the bronzer, it’s all about extending the life of your tan. Which means skin care! To extend the life of your tan we advise that you wait 10-12 hours before you take your first shower, to give the solution as much time as possible to set into the outer layers of your skin. Some people choose to sleep with the bronzer on, you can – and if you do please put on older sheets so the bronzer doesn’t rub off on your nice ones. But also remember than the bronzer will tan what it comes into contact with so if your hands end up on your stomach or your chin rests on your shoulder you may get really dark in some places you don’t want to be really dark. And note – the bronzer does wash out of clothing very easily and won’t stain. After your 10-12 hours with a great tan base you’ll want to rinse the bronzer off, don’t use soap or scrub hard, just lightly rinse the solution off – when you do you’ll see a lot of dark bronzer going down the drain… DO NOT PANIC as this is simply the bronzer from the solution and it’s suppose to rinse off. After your shower pat yourself dry with a towel, do not rub. And use a light moisturizer at least twice a day to keep your skin as moist as possible. SUNGUN has a specially designed moisturizer and extender that are formulated to work with your tan. The most effective advice we can give you is to put on as much lotion as you can. The more moisturized your skin is, the longer your airbrush tan will last.
